Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society meeting to feature Summerville Anniversary

The Augusta-Richmond County Historical Society will hold an open meeting at 7:30 pm on September 20 at the Church of the Good Shepherd to feature the Summerville neighborhood’s 150^th Anniversary. The presentation will include a video of a past tours of homes and parades.

Winter weather is upon us, so come and join us for a toasty gathering of friends and neighbors at the quaint shops on Monte Sano Avenue.

They’ll be serving food, cocktails and plenty of cheer. Browse the stores, meet the sales staff, and enjoy the warm hospitality which has long been a tradition on Monte Sano Avenue.

It is our collective goal to return Monte Sano Avenue to a time when you were welcomed by name, treated as a friend, and served with the utmost respect and regard.

Some of the store owners grew up on “The Hill” and can easily recall those times when the merchants on Monte Sano were an integral part of our community. One of those is local author/artist, Carroll Kelly, who has recently been bestowed the honorary title of Mayor of Monte Sano by none other than the previous (long-time) honorary Mayor, Ferris Dorr.

Her shop, Knick Knack Paddy Whack Grand Emporium, is located at 1415 Monte Sano Avenue. Ms. Kelly’s book, Is There A NUN in the HOUSE?, chronicles many of the adventures of growing up on “The Hill”, and is on sale at her shop.

All of the shops on Monte Sano offer unique and lovely merchandise, with many items on sale for the special First Thursday Event. So stop and shop Monte Sano from McDowell to Wrightsboro and delight in having the red carpet rolled out for your arrival! Happy New Year from all of us on Monte Sano!

SNA Christmas giving

In the spirit of the season, SNA contributed $650 to sponsor ten children through Augusta Urban Ministries’ children’s Christmas program and $500 for Christmas gifts for residents in Safe Homes of Augusta. Checks were presented at the ASU Christmas tree lighting on December 2.

Gift baskets were presented to law enforcement agencies protecting the neighborhood including MCG Public Safety and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

First Thursday celebration expands to Monte Sano Avenue

The monthly First Thursday celebration in Summerville will now be expanded to the Shops of Summerville along Monte Sano Avenue.

The event will consist of the shops and businesses along Monte Sano Avenue offering event only sales, refreshments for guests as well as live entertainment provided by Dr. Deborah Hemingway.

The event is from 5-8pm on Thursday December 2, 2010.

Summerville Neighborhood Association 2011 Annual Meeting & Election

Please plan to attend the Summerville Neighborhood Association 2011 Annual Meeting at 6 p.m. on December 16 at the Partridge Inn.

The meeting will briefly touch on the success of the 2010 Tour of Homes and will include elections for four board positions and two officer positions, becoming vacant due to two year terms expiring.

The following Summerville residents have been nominated to fill those vacant positions:

Officers (two year terms)
- Secretary, current SNA Board member and nominee Mary Margaret Howard
- Treasurer, current SNA Board member and nominee Mike O’Neill
Board Positions (two year terms)
- Nominee Cameron Bentley
- Nominee Nicci Bush
- Nominee Marci Cannon
- Nominee Kathleen Barnhart

Nominations for these six positions will remain open until 6 p.m. the night of the election. If there are contested elections for any positions, voting will take place after all nominees are introduced and given the opportunity to speak.

All SNA members are invited to attend, and it is also a great opportunity to introduce new Summerville residents to the board, and encourage them to join SNA!
